How do you think books have influenced and shaped our lives throughout the centuries?

Do they reflect the human condition?

More importantly, are you ready to embrace new ideas and philosophies?

Description:

Placement in this course is based on a student’s needs and interests, and on her/his English language abilities. IB A1 English is a two-year course designed for native English-speakers or those students who feel most academically confident in English.

English A1 offers students the opportunity to explore challenging and provocative literature from different cultures and times. The course emphasizes written and oral communication, analytical ability, and the sensitive examination of works of other cultures.

Over the two years, Higher Level students will read fifteen works, including novels, plays, poetry, and prose non-fiction. Standard Level students will read eleven works. All students will complete the same in-class work, though Higher Level students will be assessed using more rigorous standards. Class work will include regular writing assignments, presentations, and class discussions.

For all IB diploma and certificate students, the final score in English derives from several measures: a two-part written examination taken around May of the second year, one independently-produced essay on works in translation (two for HL) and two oral assignments.
