The Principal

 

Mr. Richard Naylor: MA, PGCE, NPQH.: 

Richard was educated in Yorkshire and Scotland, where he trained to be a teacher, before moving to London to work.  His degree is in Medieval History from the University of St Andrews - the home of golf!  Having spent the 1990s working in London, he moved to Moscow in 2000 where he stayed until moving to Shanghai at the end of July 2008.  His other hobbies include mountaineering and hillwalking, kayaking, chess, and cycling.  Mr Naylor has taught History, Maths, RE, and ICT, and currently helps within the TOK dept in Rego’s IB programme.

 

Primary Section

 

John Zermani: B.A., P.G.C.E.: Head of Primary.  John is a graduate of Design, and gained his P.G.C.E at Goldsmith’s College, University of London. He has worked at international schools in Asia since 1992, and was Principal at St. Stephen’s International School where he worked for 8 years, and more recently as Deputy Director at Satit Bilingual School in Bangkok. He has taught Primary and Secondary students of all ages, including the IGCSE and the IB. He is currently in his 4th year as Head of Primary at Rego.

 

Darren Sibley: B.Ed. (Hons): Deputy Head of Primary. Darren taught in the UK for 17 years with the last four as Headteacher of Spratton C of E Primary School in Northampton. He joined REGO in 2007 and his main area of teaching is in the sciences and maths. He is a keen sports enthusiast and is an active rugby player. He enjoys travel and reading Sci Fi and Fantasy books.

 

Niki-Elise Tindal: M.A., P.G.C.E.: Reception Teacher, Foundation Stage Co-ordinator.  Niki is a graduate of St Andrew's University and gained her PGCE at the University of Warwick.  She has worked most recently as a residential assistant housemistress at Pipers Corner School, Buckinghamshire and has had a variety of experience as a camp counsellor and teacher in the USA and teaching in the English International School, Padua, Italy.  She is very keen on sport and holds lifeguard qualifications and she also enjoys ballet.

 

Georgina Hunter: B.Sc. (Hons), P.G.C.E: Nursery Teacher.  Science Subject Leader, Georgina’s degree was in Marine Biology with Ocean Science and after a brief career in the commercial and industrial field she did her P.G.C.E. at the University of Exeter.  She taught initially in the UK but has most recently been working in Granada, Spain. She is a keen sportswoman and assisted in developing school sports whilst working in England. She joined REGO in 2006 and she has been the Primary Science coordinator for three years. She has a young son who was born in Shanghai and who attends the school.

 

Russel Tilly: B.Ed. (Hons):  Year 1 Teacher and Head of Year, Subject Leader for Art and DT.  A graduate of the University of Hertfordshire, Russel has been working at Dr Tripletts CoE Primary School in Middlesex where he helped to develop the Art and Numeracy strategies.  He is a keen world-wide traveller and is an active squash and tennis player.

 

 

Katie Jervis: BA (Hons.) PGCE. Year 1 Teacher, Subject leader for PSHE.  Katie is a graduate of Brock University in Ontario, Canada and later went on to do her PGCE at Strathclyde University in Glasgow, Scotland. She spent two years teaching at both public elementary schools and private institutes in South Korea. She has also spent many years teaching recreational gymnastics. She enjoys traveling and practicing pilates in her free time.

 

Rachael Sibley: B.Sc., P.G.C.E.: Year 2 Teacher and Early Years Coordinator, Head of Year 2. Rachael has been working in teaching for sixteen years after graduating, in Biomedical Sciences, from Nottingham Trent University in 1991 and completing her PGCE at Nene College in Northampton in 1992. She has taught in many different schools and had experience of teaching all Primary year groups. She has co-ordinated P.E., Numeracy, Literacy, Science, Assessment, Special Educational Needs, ICT, and DT as well as experience as Year Group leader and Key Stage responsibilities. Four years ago she became Acting Deputy Head Teacher and undertook her qualification for headship. Before joining REGO, as Year 2 Leader, she was Head Teacher of a small village primary school in Northamptonshire. Her interests include reading, computers, cross stitch, cinema and travelling.

 

Jonathon Donnelly: B.Ed., Dip Ed: Year 2 Teacher. Jonathon completed his degree with the University of Canberra, Australia. He is specialised in ICT and has experience teaching primary, secondary and adult classes. Interests and hobbies include ICT, touch football and travelling.

 

Joseph Dent: B.A., P.G.C.E.: Year 3 Teacher.  A graduate of Hull University, Joseph gained his P.G.C.E. at Sunderland University and taught initially in the U.K. before going to work in the British International School in Moscow where he has been for the last two years.  He enjoys sport, especially coaching soccer.

 

Kevin Reay: BA Hons and PGCE. Year 3 Teacher, Head of Year 3, Subject Leader Humanities. Kevin is a graduate of Northumbria University. Initially he taught at Primary Schools in Gateshead, England. His experience includes teaching Reception, Year 1 classes and PE coordinator. He is a qualified football coach. He enjoys travelling, and is a keen keep fit enthusiast engaging in trekking, cross-country running and football.

 

Jo Hughson: B.Ed: Year 3 Teacher Jo comes from Melbourne, Australia. She graduated from Deakin University, Australia and has spent the majority of her career teaching in Australia and the United Kingdom. She has extensive experience working as a Year Group Co-coordinator, Student Representative Council Leader and Subject Leader. Her main interests include music, dining out, photography, travelling, cooking and art-house cinema. Jo is married and has 2 young daughters.

Annette Harvey: Year 4 Teacher, Head of year 4 and Lower KS2 Coordinator. Annette initially trained in secondary education as a PE teacher, which she enjoyed for 10 years. She has spent the last 12 years working in various Primary schools in KS2 in England and abroad holding various areas of responsibilities. Her main interest is in field hockey as she is an international umpire both indoors and outdoors.  She also enjoys knitting and loves the colour orange

 Michelle Goode: B.A (Hons), Q.T.S.: Year 4 Teacher. Michelle is a graduate of Manchester Metropolitan University, her area of specialism is in History. She initially taught in and around the Midlands, before moving to Runnymede College in Madrid, Spain. After 4 years teaching in Spain, Michelle decided to broaden her international experience by moving to Shanghai. Outside of school, Michelle enjoys reading, traveling, listening to music, dining out and cooking.

Mark Stringfellow: B.A. (Ed): Year 4 Teacher, ICT Subject leader. A graduate of Canterbury Christ Church College with specialisms in History and ICT, Mark initially taught in and around Watford, Herts, before moving to The British International School of Jeddah.  He returned to teach at Bradfield Junior School, Hemel Hempstead, in January 2004 but now wants to teach abroad again.  He has held responsibility posts with regard to Maths, History and ICT in Key Stage 2.  He is interested in football and enjoys music.

Emma Tilly: M.A., P.G.C.E.: Year 5 Teacher, Head of Year 5 and Upper KS2 Coordinator.  A graduate of the University of Glasgow, Emma went on to get her teaching qualification at the University of Plymouth.  She has been teaching at Welldon Park First School, Harrow and is keen on swimming, squash and yoga.

 

Mark Scott: B.A., P.G.C.E.: Year 5 Teacher. A graduate of Essex University and subsequently trained at Moray House (Edinburgh University), Mark has worked both in primary schools in Scotland and in Japan, and Dali Medical College (Yunnan). Mark has been at SRIS for four years, teaching in years four and five. Previously he taught English in Japan for four years working in primary, secondary and special needs schools, and prior to that a year in China at a medical college. Before training to be a teacher at Edinburgh University Mark had an arts background. He also likes the outdoors.

 

Debbie Fineberg: BEd (Hons): Year 5 Teacher, Subject Leader Literacy. Debbie is a graduate of Manchester Metropolitan University. She has been teaching in Liverpool across the Key Stages and has held various posts of responsibility. She is a keen traveller and enjoys sports activities.

 

Janice Kilmurray: B.Ed., T.E.F.L. cert.: Year 6 Teacher and Head of Year 6.  Janice spent several years working in Human Resources and Business Administration before returning to education, graduating with B Ed (Hons) from the University of Dundee. Having taught in various primary posts in her native Scotland, Janice is joined in China by her husband and 2 children. A keen traveller, she has lived in Hungary and toured extensively throughout the rest of Europe. She is a keen follower of rugby and enjoys participating in outdoor activities.

 

Lindsay Strickland: BA(Hons): Year 6 Teacher, Subject Leader Mathematics. Lindsay is a Primary Education graduate of Chichester University with a specialism in English. She had been teaching in England for two years before moving to Shanghai to teach Year 2 in 2007. This year, Lindsay is teaching Year 6 and continues her role as Primary Maths Manager. Outside of school, Lindsay likes to read, listen to music and is hoping to do more horse riding since her adventures in Australia over the summer.

 

Gary Ilines: BA, CTEFLA, PGCE:  Year 6 Teacher Gary graduated from The University of Sussex with honours in Economics with French.  After completing the Cambridge CTEFLA, he taught English as a foreign language for twelve years in Poland, Korea and finally Thailand where he became fluent in Thai. Gary worked as an HTML programmer for a company in the United States for eight years before returning to England where he completed his PGCE at Sussex University, specializing in modern languages – French and German.  He taught primary maths in an international school in Thailand for two years before moving to Shanghai in 2008.  He is an avid tropical gardener and is also keen on mountain biking, tennis, swimming and is currently football coach for Rego’s under-12 football team.

 

Primary Specialist Teachers

 

Christopher Brown: B.Ed.: Head of Primary PE. Christopher is a graduate of the University of Paisley and has worked for schools in Scotland and more recently for an International School in Uganda.  He has many sports qualifications including Football, Rugby and Netball and is a fully qualified IRB Rugby Referee.  He is a keen athlete and plays Football and Rugby on a regular basis for teams in based Shanghai.

 

Daniel Iddon: B.Sc. Q.T.S. Head of Secondary PE and KS 2 PE Teacher.  Graduate of the University of Sunderland and first worked as a fitness instructor/coordinator for Sebastian Coe Health and Fitness Clubs.  After a brief spell with the Lancashire Police Force decided to commit to teaching and gained qualified teacher status as a secondary school P.E. teacher. He taught at a specialist sports college in the north of England before joining the staff of Shanghai Rego International School.

 

Malcolm Green: B.A. Hons. Co-Aquatics Director. Malcolm graduated from De Montfort University Bedford having studied Physical Education with Art. He immersed himself into swimming as a fulltime athlete competing internationally and as a teacher and coach. Prior to his arrival at Rego he was employed as the head of junior coaching at Stockport Metro which is one of the most successful swimming programmes in the U.K. Malcolm has a wide range of experience and swimming qualifications having worked with all levels from beginners to Olympic and Paralympic swimmers.

 

Taylor Smith: BSc Hons, PGDE:  Co-Aquatics Director and PE Teacher. Taylor Graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 2005 with a degree in Sport Science.  After narrowly missing out on a place in the Commonwealth Games swim team, he decided to further his career in teaching.  He returned to Edinburgh University in 2007 and completed his PGDE in Physical Education Teaching.  His love for swimming coaching has seen him coach some of the best swimmers in Scotland with Edinburgh's Warrender Baths Club, who are currently the Scottish National Champions.

 

Richard Breen:  B.A. Hons.: Swimming Teacher. Richard graduated at Coventry University studying Business Management. Richard has competed in many international swimming competitions through his schooling, university and a full time job. He has taught swimming at various leisure centers in Leicestershire for two years before coming to Rego. He has also taught and coached swimmers to compete at County Championships with his local club, Leicester Penguins for many years. He also has four years experience of lifeguarding.

 

Catrina Watt, B.Ed (Human Movement and Health Education, University of Syndey), PE Teacher Catrina worked for five years as a PDHPE teacher at Windsor High School, Sydney, where she carried numerous roles including sports master, welfare and SRC/Leadership Coordinator. She has travelled extensively in Africa, Europe and South America and Shanghai Rego is her first overseas teaching appointment. Catriona enjoys participating in a wide variety of sports including football, surfing, triathlons and hiking. She is also a qualified and experienced football coach back home in Australia having worked with boys and girls of various abilities.

 

Sara Howe: B.A. T.E.F.L. (Advanced). Head of English as an Additional Language (E.A.L).  Sara is a geography graduate of Exeter University. She has worked for the Riding for the Disabled and taught in Mexico City for two years before moving to Shanghai. Sara is a keen horsewoman. She has competed at county level in show jumping and Tetrathlon. She holds a British Horse Society certificate to teach riding to children under the age of 14. Sara’s interests include photography, travel, music and swimming.

Benjamin Hughson: BEd, TEFL: EAL Teacher. Ben is a graduate of Monash University in Australia who has spent the majority of his career working as an engineer in private consulting firms, water authorities and local government. Ben started teaching EAL at REGO in 2007. He has also spent time teaching children at the Shanghai American School, Rainbow Bridge International School and Hillingdon Manor School in the UK. He is a lover of the outdoors and enjoys hiking, fishing, and nature study. Currently most of his leisure time is spent writing his masters thesis and keeping his wife and two young daughters under control.

 

Clare Rothwell: PGCE (UCT). EAL Teacher. Clare is a graduate of the University of Cape Town, South Africa. After completing her BA she decided to work overseas for a year or two – that was sometime in the 90’s. She has taught EAL / EFL in Taiwan, Italy, and most recently in Moscow, Russia. She enjoys reading, watching films, embroidery, woodwork and skiing, and would like to build her own house one day.

 

Ron Rosenow: B.A. Spanish/Linguistics, M.Ed. ESL/2nd Languages and Cultures. EAL Teacher. Ron graduated from the University of Minnesota in the United States.  He began his teaching career as an EAL Teacher in Minnesota public schools.  Most recently he has been the Primary EAL Teacher at the American School of Barcelona in Spain.  Ron enjoys photography and making movies.  He also is an avid tennis player.  Ron has a passion for traveling, experiencing different cultures and languages firsthand.

 

Karen Wang: M.A, T.E.F L. EAL Teacher: Karen is keen to share her variety of talents with the students. Dancing is one of her interests.

 

Rachel Jiang B.A., TEFL, EAL Teacher. Graduated from Jiaxing University, Zhejiang, Rachel was awarded a major in English and a certificate of English and Interpretation Grade 8. Working in Rego is her first full-time job after graduation although she tried to gain work experience while at university. She has worked as an interpreter and a translator in some International Exhibitions and also worked as a personal tutor teaching Mandarin and English to foreign professionals.

 

Mayke Van Krevel: B.A. Dutch Mother Tongue Programme (Nederlandse School Shanghai) Coordinator: Mayke is teaching Dutch to native speakers in Primary and Secondary. Mayke has a degree in Primary Teaching and educational science. Before coming to Shanghai, Mayke worked in a Primary school for 5 years. After graduating in educational science, she worked as a curriculum designer and teacher trainer at Hogeschool Zuyd.  Mayke likes to travel in China with her husband, three kids and backpack.

 

An Smeuninx: M.A., T. Cert: Dutch Mother Tongue Programme Teacher. An graduated from Hasselt University with a degree in interior design. She then obtained a Teaching Degree. She worked in a Belgian science centre and taught there in different schools before coming to Shanghai. This is her 3rd year in the school’s Dutch program. She enjoys running, painting and reading.

 

Heike Boettcher: German Mother Tongue Programme Teacher. Heike has been a teacher for more than twenty years now. She studied at the University of Leipzig, Germany. Since she graduated she works as a German teacher in Primary and Secondary as well as a student’s adviser. She is a keen world-wide traveller and also interested in reading, dancing, walking, snowshoeing and spending time with her two grown up daughters.

 

Anne-Joelle Mazet: B.A.: French Mother Tongue Programme Teacher. Anne graduated from Paris La Sorbonne University with a Research Degree in French Literature. After various teaching experiences both with adults and children, she graduated from French educational system as a French teacher. She exercised during several years in South of Paris before moving to China. Anne enjoys over all reading, writing and telling Stories and tales.

 

Laurence Delamarre: B.A.: French Mother Tongue Programme Teacher. Laurence graduated from Paris-IX Dauphine, DESS in international trade. After a few years, she decided it was time for a career change and she started her educational studies. She graduated from the French educational system as a primary teacher and she has been teaching children from grade 1 till grade 4. She is very interested in discovering new countries, and has lived in Morocco and Switzerland before. Laurence enjoys playing the piano, music, swimming and reading.

 

Iris Howorka: B.A.: German Mother Tongue Programme Teacher. Iris was trained as a Primary teacher specialising in German, Maths and Arts. She comes from Kierspe a small city near Cologne in Germany and graduated from the University of Siegen (Germany) in 1997. Before moving to Shanghai in 2007, she was working as a primary class teacher in 2 different primary schools in her hometown. She has more than 10 years of teaching experience! Iris enjoys spending time with her family, running and travelling.

 

Maggie Zhang: B.A.:  KS1 & Lower KS2 Music Teacher.  Maggie has been a part of Rego family for three years. Moreover she has helped to organize and participate in Rego’s annual school performances. As a music teacher in Key Stage 1, Maggie provides the children with a firm foundation on which to build their musical skills and knowledge. Also, her understanding of Children’s psychology makes her establish the communication between them effectively and easily. In addition to the flute, Maggie is also an accomplished singer and pianist. Outside of school she likes to travel and has recently returned from a summer trip to Europe.  Maggie is completing her PGCE this year.

 

John Barrie Wade: B.A., P.G.C.E. Head of Performing Arts and Upper KS2 Music Teacher.  John was educated at Leicester and Birmingham Universites.  Successful career over a period of eleven years in the U.K. starting in London, then Eastbourne and lastly in Cornwall.  He is an active performer who enthusiastically embraces all the arts.

 

Christina Haaf: B.A., M.A., P.G.C.E.: Upper KS2 and Secondary Music Teacher, Second in Music. Christina is from Germany. She studied performance at the University Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. Her main instrument is the harp. In addition she studied the piano as part of her degree. Her musical career spans a number of orchestras and international solo performances. Christina has lived and taught in the UK for three years. Her musical and teaching engagements have brought her into several countries, including Lebanon, Mexico, Brazil, Switzerland and France.

 

Gabriele Meirano: B.A., ABRSM Teaching Cert.: Music Administration (individual music tuition programme) and Piano Teacher. Gabriel will be joining us to organise the peripatetic music service and to be our main school piano teacher for private tuition.  Currently he is teaching for the Soundstep Music School in London for whom he tutors keyboard work to primary and middle school students throughout the city.  He is also an experienced modern jazz pianist and has performed at many London venues.

 

Helen Goodman: B.A. (Hons): Theatre Dramaturgy (University of Leeds); PGCE: English and Drama (University of Cambridge). Drama Teacher (Upper KS2 and Secondary). Her writing has been performed at the West Yorkshire Playhouse, Leeds; she enjoys creating, choreographing and presenting both scripted and physical movement theatre. Helen also enjoys sports and gardening.

 

Eileen George: DiP (Dartington) and PGCE (University of Exeter) in English/ Drama.  Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO).  Eileen began her career studying Theatre and Dance at Dartington College of Arts in Devon and since then has taught in Primary and Secondary schools in London, Cumbria and the North East of England.  She has also worked in Japan, Hong Kong and Baltimore, USA.   Whilst at a large London Primary School she was SENCO for 8 years. She established the Learning Support Department there which helped to support children to achieve in their learning. Most recently she has taught as Drama Tutor for the Youth Theatre Group at Live Theatre, Newcastle/ Gateshead and she teaches every year at a Summer School in Sussex as Drama Teacher and Workshop Leader. She has family in Australia and the UK and has visited China many times.

 

Mandarin Teachers and Teacher Assistants

 

Eva Xu: B.A., Cert. of Ed Head of Whole School Mandarin. Graduate of East China Normal University with a degree in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language. Eva joined SRIS when it opened in 2003 and has gained a lot of teaching experience in both primary and Secondary. Before joining SRIS, Eva was teaching English at a local school.

 

Anny Zhu: B.A. Mandarin Teacher.  Graduate of Shanghai University specializing in Chinese Language and Literature and also teacher training for Chinese as a Foreign Language.  Most recently worked at The Omega Institute as a Mandarin teacher.

 

Michelle Chen: B.A. Mandarin Teacher. Michelle has studied at Anhui BengBu Radio and TV University where she graduated in English. She also completed further studies at Shanghai International Studies University.  She has worked for the QunLun International Education company as a teacher and translator.

 

Jane Zhang: B.A. Mandarin Teacher Graduate of Shanghai East Normal University specializing in English and Education.  Jane has also studied nursing and has most recently been working at Kinderworld International Kindergarten.

 

Catherine Sui: B.A.  Mandarin Teacher. Catherine has taught in local schools as an English teacher having graduated from Shenyang Normal University.  She is interested in aerobics and has won competitions in that sport!

 

Sophie Zeng: B.A.  Mandarin Teacher. Graduate from Shanghai Normal University. Before joining SRIS, Sophie was a Mandarin teacher at another International School in Shanghai.

 

Micci Qu: B.A. Teacher Assistant Nursery, TA Co-Ordinator Early Years. Micci graduated from the University of Central China in 2004 with a degree and teaching certificate in Language and Literature. Before teaching at REGO, Micci worked as a teacher in a local school in Shanghai, as a private tutor and as an interpreter. She recently gained further teaching certification in teaching Mandarin to foreigners from the Beijing Language and Culture University. Her interests include travel and arts and crafts and her passion is working with children.

 

Vivien Zhang: B.A. Teacher Assistant RC. Vivien graduated from Shanghai International Study University.  Before joining SRIS, she taught at Tiny Tots for one and a half years. She in interested in reading and in travelling.

 

Jane Zou: B.A. Teacher Assistant Y1A. Jane graduated from East China Normal University, majoring in Early Childhood Education. Before joining Rego she was teaching at Dong Gou Kindergarten. Jane is also a qualified ballet teacher.

 

Lala Jiang: Cert Ed. Teacher Assistant Y1B. Lala studied at the East China Normal Teacher’s college and has been teaching locally for 8 years. Initially working at a Chinese school her most recent experience has been at a local Kindergarten.  She has qualifications in ballet and music.

 

Selina Wu: B.A ., Cert. Ed. Teacher Assistant Y2A. Selina is a graduate of Shanghai International Studies University. Before joining SRIS, Selina taught in local schools. She is interested in reading, history, cultural relics and she is a volunteer of Shanghai Museum. 

 

Yvonne Fu: B.A. Teacher Assistant Y2B. Yvonne is a graduate of Shanghai Normal University where she majored in early childhood education. She is interested in singing.

 

Felicia Yang: B.A. Teacher Assistant Y3A: Xiaoyang is a graduate in Psychology and Teaching from the East of China Normal University.  She has been working at Shanghai Changning Kindergarten and will be joining SRIS as a classroom assistant in the Reception class (Foundation Stage.)

 

Arlene Huang: Dip Business English: Teacher Assistant Y3B. Arlene studied at Shanghai Marketing International Business College and has been working as a teaching assistant at Shanghai Sunflower Montessori School after a brief period in the field of commerce including work at the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum.  She joins SRIS as a classroom assistant in the Nursery class (Foundation Stage.)

 

Sybil Qian: B.A. Teacher Assistant Y3C. Sybil graduated from Shanghai Normal University, majoring in Biology. Sybil has a passion for education

 

Jessica Wang: B.A. Cert Ed Teacher Assistant Y4A. Jessica graduated in Education from Shanghai Donghua Normal University. Before joining SRIS, she taught in a local kindergarten for 6 years. Jessica is good at dancing and handmade.

 

Dorothy Dai: B.A., Cert. of English Education Teacher Assistant Y4B. Dorothy graduated from Shanghai International Studies University. She enjoys reading, rock-climbing, travelling. She also got tourist guide qualification. Before joining SRIS, Dorothy worked in an international education company to help students get offers from US top 100 universities.

 

Gina Gu: B.A., Cert. Ed. Teacher Assistant Y4C, TA Co-Ordinator KS2. Gina graduated in International Business from Shanghai Jiaotong University. Before joining SRIS, she taught in a local primary school for 6 years and in a training institution for 2 years. Gina is interested in photography.

 

Vivian Wu: B.A. Teacher Assistant Y5A. Vivian graduated from Shanghai Jiaotong University. Before joining SRIS, she taught at Kinderworld Kindergarten for 3 years. She loves teaching and kids.

 

Tina Chen: B.A. Teacher Assistant Y5B Graduate of East China Normal University majoring in Early Childhood Learning.  Granted first level teacher’s certificate by the National Ministry of Education and worked in Shanghai JinMeng Kindergarten before joining SRIS.

 

Nancy Yu: B.A. Teacher Assistant Y5C.  Nancy graduated from Hong Kong Finance College majoring in English. Nancy has worked as both a TA and a Mandarin teacher at Livingston American School (3 years) and as a private tutor (2 years) for the students from Yew Chung International School, Yew Wah International School, Dulwich College and Livingston American School aged 9-13. She is keen on Chinese cooking and enjoys swimming and yoga.

 

Daisy Tian: B.A. Teacher Assistant Y6A: Daisy is a graduate of Shanghai International Studies University.  She has worked as an Education Counselor Assistant at Shanghai Haiyi Education Group and also at Shanghai Shangde School where she taught Mandarin and English. 

 

Christine Liu: B.A. Teacher Assistant Y6B.  Christina was educated at Shanghai Tourism Vocational School majoring in English. She taught at Tiny Tots pre-school and Kindergarten before coming to SRIS.

 

Pucca Liu: B.A. Teacher Assistant Y6C. Pucca graduated from Shanghai Second Technology University and obtained a junior high school English teaching certificate. Pucca has more than 3 years experience of teaching in international schools. She is good at teaching non-Chinese speakers Mandarin. She is also fluent in German and Korean.

 

Emma Britton: Library. Emma is from a small town in Western Australia, which is about as different from Shanghai as you could imagine. She moved here 2 years ago with her teacher husband and 2 children.  In Australia she worked as a Senior Travel Consultant which helped feed her need for travel.  Emma loves reading and books. She joined SRIS this year as the primary library overseer, a role that she relishes.

 

Secondary Section

 

Mathematics & Sciences

 

David Frame: B.Sc. P.G.C.E.  Deputy Head of Secondary, TOK and Science Teacher, Chemistry. David graduated from Exeter University with an honours degree in Chemistry and gained his teaching qualification at the University of London.  After initial work for three years in Barstable School, Basildon, David went to work at The Edron International School, Mexico.  He is a keen all round sportsman and is a qualified National Cricket Association Coach. 

 

Ian Lindley: B.Sc., Cert Ed: IB Co-Ordinator and Head of Upper School and Physics Teacher. A graduate of Leeds University where he also completed his Cert Ed., Ian was previously Head of Physics and Joint Head of Science at Horsforth School, Leeds. As a scientist, he has strong leanings towards the arts and has directed many musical productions for his schools. His recent success was the organisation of the whole school production of “Oliver!” which included over 300 students from years 4 to 13.  Apart from these pursuits he also enjoys guitar playing, travel and fell walking.

 

Caroline Troughton: B.Sc. M.Sc.: CAS Coordinator, Head of Science, Biology Teacher, Activities Coordinator Caroline graduated from Portsmouth University with a degree in Molecular Biology before going onto do a Masters degree in Forensic Science at the University of Strathclyde.   She successfully completed a Graduate Teacher Programme at Canterbury Christchurch University College in the UK and taught for three years at Castle Community College in Kent before heading out to Shanghai over two years ago.  Caroline’s interests include Pilates, swimming, skiing and travelling.  She is currently learning Mandarin and is involved in the running of the International Award.

 

Matthew Oakes: BSc., MSc., P.G.C.E. Science & Physics Teacher. Matt graduated with a Physics degree from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST), obtained a Masters degree in Satellite Remote Sensing at University College London (UCL), and trained as a teacher at the University of Leeds. He has spent the subsequent years working in the private sector, travelling the world, and teaching in England and China. His hobbies include reading, watching films, and attempting to play the guitar. Unfortunately for him, he also supports Hull City Football Club.

 

Peter Chong: B.Sc., P.G.C.E.  Head of Mathematics. Peter is a Mathematics graduate of the University of London. He taught at The Grey Coat Hospital School for four years before moving to Shanghai. He has been involved with the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme and has been on many camping expeditions. Peter enjoys playing the guitar, learning languages and keeping fit by going to the gym.

 

Richard Cooper: B.Sc., P.G.C.E. Mathematics and TOK Teacher.  A graduate of Leeds University, Richard gained his P.G.C.E. from Exeter University. Richard is now entering his fifth year at Rego and his eleventh in total in Shanghai. In this time he has managed to gain a passable fluency in Mandarin and has worked hard on expanding his family, which will soon include a daughter to go with his two sons. When Richard is not changing nappies he enjoys travel, reading non-fiction and supporting Port Vale F.C.

 

John Watkins: B.A., B.Ed.:  Mathematics Teacher.  John has had considerable teaching experience in Mathematics in schools in Liverpool including Quarry Bank where John Lennon of Beatles fame was a student!  Formerly Head of Mathematics, Examinations Officer, Cover and Data Manager at St John Bosco High School.  A keen player, coach and organsier of cricket, John also has been studying Mandarin and learning Tai Chi.

 

John Erwin: B.Sc (IT), B.Sc (Technology Education). Head of ICT.  A Graduate of The University of Sunderland, John joins us from Beths Grammar School, Bexley, Kent where he has been teaching in the U.K.  Previously, John has had experience working abroad in Syrian and Kuwait.  He has a variety of interests.

 

The Arts

John Barrie Wade: B.A., P.G.C.E.  Head of Performing Arts and Music. Educated at Leicester and Birmingham Universities.  John had Successful career over a period of eleven years in the U.K. starting in London, then Eastbourne and lastly in Cornwall. An active performer who enthusiastically embraces all the arts.

 

Christina Haaf: B.A., M.A., P.G.C.E.: Second in Music and TOK Teacher. Christina is from Germany. She studied performance at the University Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. Her main instrument is the harp. In addition she studied the piano as part of her degree. Her musical career spans a number of orchestras and international solo performances. Christina has lived and taught in the UK for three years. Her musical and teaching engagements have brought her into several countries, including Lebanon, Mexico, Brazil, Switzerland and France.

 

Carl Binstead: B.A., P.G.C.E.  Head of Art, TOK & DT Teacher.  Carl is a Three Dimensional design graduate of Manchester Metropolitan University. He has worked as a freelance artist and sculptor for a number of years before qualifying as a teacher at St Martin's College, Lancaster.  He has taught in schools in the North West of England before joining Rego in 2006. He has a wide variety of interests which extend to sculpture, painting and baking (food technology !) since his family's business was in baking and confectionery.

 

Gillian Hunter: B.A., P.G.C.E.:  Art Teacher. Gillian is a graduate of Sunderland University and completed her PGCE at University College St Martins, Lancaster.  She has taught at schools in Lancaster and Burnley and is very keen on mixed media work in Art.  She has completed The Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards up to and including gold level and enjoys sport and travel.

 

Julia Melvin: B.A. Communications, PGCE. Head of Design and TechnologyAs a Graphic Designer, Julia has worked in the fields of publishing, advertising, film and animation and latterly, interactive television. To extend a successful career, she chose to teach in the field she is passionate about. After gaining a PGCE at Goldsmiths College, London, she taught in two inner London schools and currently, is very excited by the prospect of working in Shanghai. Her interests are simple, family, travel, cinema and food.

 

Helen Goodman: B.A. (Hons): Theatre Dramaturgy (University of Leeds); PGCE: English and Drama (University of Cambridge). Drama Teacher (Upper KS2 and Secondary). Her writing has been performed at the West Yorkshire Playhouse, Leeds; she enjoys creating, choreographing and presenting both scripted and physical movement theatre. Helen also enjoys sports and gardening.

 

Languages.

Adam Flower: B.A., P.G.C.E.  Cert TESOL.  Head of Modern Languages.  A graduate of The University of the West of England, Adam gained his P.G.C.E. at Leeds University. He subsequently worked for three years at Roundhay High School in Leeds and whilst there organised a number of residential trips. His interests are mainly travelling and sport and as a Bristol Rovers supporter he is always willing to champion the underdog!

 

Catherine Clerc: Ph.D., M.A. Examinations Officer and French Teacher. Catherine is a French national who after graduating in English in Dijon in France studied at Leeds for her M.A. and gained her doctorate at Keele University. Catherine opted for a secondary school teaching career and taught in Darlington and Northampton before coming to Shanghai in 2004. She enjoys being with her son and running.

 

Chris Pye: B.A.(hons),  P.G.C.E. French and Spanish Teacher. A graduate of The University of Liverpool, Chris gained his P.G.C.E. at Liverpool Hope University. He has previously taught at Hilbre High School on the Wirral and has organized foreign language trips to France and Spain. His many interests include playing the drums, reading crime fiction, practising martial arts, climbing, foreign cinema and travel.

 

Rhoda Yates: M.B.A., B.A., P.G.C.E.: Modern Foreign Languages & Economics Teacher, TOK Co-Ordinator.  After a ten year career in government (in international relations), Rhoda obtained her teaching qualifications in the UK through the University of Gloucester.  She has taught in Worcester/Herefordshire & Oxfordshire.  More recently, she coached a team of students attending the Student Model UN Assembly in Singapore. Her interests range from music to martial arts.  

 

Angie Roussounis: B.A., P.G.C.E: Head of English. Angie has a degree in Theology and English from The University of Surrey and completed her PGCE through Medway Teacher Training in Kent.  She has been teaching at Northfleet School for Girls in Kent where she has responsibilities for teaching her two main subjects.  Angie describes herself as a film buff and enjoys yoga, swimming and cycling.

 

Jason Doorga: B.A.(Hons), M.A., P.G.C.E.: English Teacher.

Jason’s interests spread beyond the realms of Literature to Philosophy, the subject in which he gained his Master’s degree from the University of Wales, Lampeter. Jason previously taught in China before returning to the U.K. to complete a teaching degree at the University of West England in Bristol. He has studied Mandarin and a Chinese health system called Buqi.

 

Kylie Schroeder: B Ed, QTS.  English and TOK Teacher. Kylie is a graduate of Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia. China marks the third continent in Kylie’s teaching career.  Having taught in her native Australia, she sought to further her experience by teaching in the UK for a year – she stayed in the Midlands for six.  She is very interested in animal welfare, and is a keen volunteer with Shanghai’s Second Chance Animal Adoption charity.  Her other passion is line dancing – too difficult to describe, too addictive to stop.  

 

Damian Burke: BA.,G Dip Ed, Dip FP, English and EAL Teacher. Damian has a degree in Asian studies and languages from the University of Queensland. He completed teacher training at the Queensland University of Technology. Damian has taught in Australia, Japan and China. He is currently working toward a Master of Education degree.

 

Robin Doherty: B.A (Hons). LTCL DipTESOL. EAL Teacher

After graduating from Glasgow Caledonian University Robin taught English for 2 years at a primary school and a private language academy in South Korea. He then returned to Scotland to complete his LTCL diploma in TESOL. He worked at a language school teaching adults in Glasgow before coming to Shanghai. He enjoys playing and watching most sports, especially football, and he likes to travel.

Robert Bounous: M.Sc., B.A., RSA Celta.  English and EAL Teacher. Upon graduation from The University of Greenwich, London, Robert, backed up by his Business Administration degree and Banking Masters duly commenced a career within the banking sector. However, while on a short study hiatus overseas, discovered his passion for teaching and has plied his language teaching trade in both Taiwan and China ever since. Having taught every key stage as well as both English and Business Studies he has a well-rounded teaching repertoire and is currently completing his PGCE studies at the University of Sunderland.

Lies Verstraete: M.A., T. Cert., Mother Tongue Co-ordinator and MT Dutch Teacher.  Lies graduated from Ghent University in Belgium with a degree in Geography and a degree in Conflict and Development. She taught Geography in different Belgian schools before teaching Dutch in Shanghai. She enjoys swimming, reading, cycling, travelling and playing saxophone

 

Cristelle Cabourdin, BA Hon., Grad. Dip., MT French Teacher, Cristelle graduated from the University of Queensland she has lived and taught in Australia and in France. She was teaching in a school in rural Victoria, Australia, before moving to Shanghai. Cristelle is a keen walker, an avid reader, loves to travel and to shop.

 

Janine Kiefert: MT German Teacher M.A. Teacher Certificate for German, Maths, Science and Social Education and Science (University in Wuppertal (First State Exam) and Teachers College in Kleve (Second State Exam).  Janine is German and grew up in the area around Düsseldorf and Cologne. She worked and travelled in Austria and New Zealand. She is interested in traveling and exploring countries, sewing, dancing and Yoga.

 

Olvido Vea-Murguia: B.A., P.G.C.E.: MT Spanish Teacher. Olvido comes from Tenerife, Spain. She graduated from Durham University in the U.K. After working in the field of retailing and as a nursery nurse, she has subsequently held teaching positions in the north of England. She has been teaching in Secondary for the last nine years up to Sixth Form level. She is an examiner for the AQA Exam Board. During her spare time in the U.K., she opened a Spanish Club where she taught students ranging from the ages of four to adults. She enjoys travelling, classical music, sailing, opera and dancing.

 

Eva Xu: B.A., Cert. of Ed Head of Whole School Mandarin. Graduate of East China Normal University with a degree in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language. Eva joined SRIS when it opened in 2003 and has gained a lot of teaching experience in both Primary and Secondary. Before joining SRIS, Eva was teaching English at a local school.

 

CoCo Shi: B.A., Candidate for Masters in MTCSOL at ECNU (Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages).  Mandarin Teacher.  Coco graduated from Nanjing Normal University with a degree in teaching English language and literature, as well as a Teacher’s qualification certificate in secondary and high schools. Before joining Rego, she taught English and geography at Shanghai Peijia International School Bilingual Department.

 

Lisa Zhang: B.A., Teaching Certificate Of Education. Mandarin Teacher. Lisa is a graduate of Shanghai Normal University. Prior to working at Rego, Lisa has worked in an English training school. At Rego, she has had three years experience working as a primary Mandarin teacher and for the past year has joined the secondary school working as a secondary Mandarin teacher. Lisa’s interests including cooking and gardening.

Elsie Yao: B.A. Mandarin Teacher. Elsie graduated from Hubei University majoring in Chinese literature and Language.  Elsie gained the highest possible Mandarin grade from SLC. She worked as a Chinese editor and as a visiting Chinese teacher before joining SRIS.  Elsie enjoys Chinese and western musicals, literature and Chinese painting.

Tingting Wang: B.A. Mandarin Teacher Ting Ting graduated from Shanghai International Studies University (SHISU) with a master degree in MTCSOL (Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other languages) and teaching qualifications. She taught Chinese to native and non-native speakers in a renowned local high school international department for three years and as a part time mandarin teacher at SHISU before joining Shanghai Rego. She enjoys reading, cycling and travelling.

 

Humanities

Brennan Cameron: B.A.: Business Studies. Brennan graduated from St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada with an honours degree in Business Management and gained his teaching degree from the State University of New York. After spending a few years in both the private and public sector Brennan went on to teach Business Studies at St. Matthew’s High School in Ottawa, Canada.  Most recently he has taught the IB Business and Management programme at the Shanghai Singapore International School.  He is looking forward to working at Rego

 

Clive Walker: BA. Hons., PGCE, TEFL. Geography Teacher. China is only the most recent in a series of overseas teaching positions- Nigeria (VSO), Uganda, Jamaica, Mexico, Spain, Swaziland, Kenya and Costa Rica. The latter included sixteen years as International Coordinator (IGCSE and IB). His main interests include sports, trekking and photography.

 

Alan Dilworth: B.A., P.G.C.E.  Head of Humanities. Before entering teaching, Alan spent twenty years in industry as a structural designer during which he worked in many different countries. He graduated from the University of Teesside during a career break.  He resumed his studies and gained his P.G.C.E from the University of Leeds and initially taught in the North East of England before teaching in Sharjah and most recently at Cambridge International School, Dubai. His main interests lie in the fields of sport, travel, and playing guitar.

 

Eleanor Parsons:  B.A., M.A., P.G.C.E.  History Teacher. Ellie graduated from Manchester University with an honours degree in History and gained her teaching degree from the Institute of Education in London.  She worked at Colfe's School in London for five years, becoming Head of History and coordinating the Duke of Edinburgh Award.  Her main interests lie in the field of sport and travel.

 

Leanne Campbell: B.Sc., P.G.C.E.: Head of Lower School, PSHE Co-Ordinator, Teacher of Psychology and School Counsellor. A graduate from Manchester University with a first class honours degree in Psychology, Leanne taught Psychology and Sociology at Rainford Sixth Form College in Merseyside before going on to complete her PGCE in Social Science at Keele University, Staffordshire. Leanne was a Psychology teacher for two years at Monkseaton Community High School, Newcastle upon Tyne where she was also involved in teaching the GCSE Integrated Humanities course. She enjoys Pilates, yoga and live music.

 

Physical Education and Games

Daniel Iddon: B.Sc. Q.T.S. Head of PE.  Graduate of the University of Sunderland and first worked as a fitness instructor/coordinator for Sebastian Coe Health and Fitness Clubs.  After a brief spell with the Lancashire Police Force decided to commit to teaching and gained qualified teacher status as a secondary school P.E. teacher. Daniel taught at a specialist sports college in the north of England before joining the staff of Shanghai Rego International School.

 

Malcolm Green: B.A. Hons. Co-Aquatics Director. Malcolm graduated from De Montfort University Bedford having studied Physical Education with Art. He immersed himself into swimming as a fulltime athlete competing internationally and as a teacher and coach. Prior to his arrival at Rego he was employed as the head of junior coaching at Stockport Metro which is one of the most successful swimming programmes in the U.K. Malcolm has a wide range of experience and swimming qualifications having worked with all levels from beginners to Olympic and Paralympic swimmers.

 

Taylor Smith: BSc Hons, PGDE:  Co-Aquatics Director and PE Teacher. Taylor Graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 2005 with a degree in Sport Science.  After narrowly missing out on a place in the Commonwealth Games swim team, he decided to further his career in teaching.  He returned to Edinburgh University in 2007 and completed his PGDE in Physical Education Teaching.  His love for swimming coaching has seen him coach some of the best swimmers in Scotland with Edinburgh's Warrender Baths Club, who are currently the Scottish National Champions.

 

Richard Breen:  B.A. Hons.: Swimming Teacher. Richard graduated at Coventry University studying Business Management. Richard has competed in many international swimming competitions through his schooling, university and a full time job. He has taught swimming at various leisure centers in Leicestershire for two years before coming to Rego. He has also taught and coached swimmers to compete at County Championships with his local club, Leicester Penguins for many years. He also has four years experience of lifeguarding.

 

Catrina Watt, B.Ed (Human Movement and Health Education, University of Syndey), PE Teacher. She worked for five years as a PDHPE teacher at Windsor High School, Sydney, where she carried numerous roles including sports master, welfare and SRC/Leadership Coordinator. She has travelled extensively in Africa, Europe and South America and Shanghai Rego is her first overseas teaching appointment. Catriona enjoys participating in a wide variety of sports including football, surfing, triathlons and hiking. She is also a qualified and experienced football coach back home in Australia having worked with boys and girls of various abilities.

 

Siau Ting Tai: B. IT., M.Sc.: Librarian. Siau Ting is a librarianship graduate of Northumbria University in the U.K. She had previously served in her university and college libraries respectively before embarking on developing SRIS secondary school library. Her hobbies are reading and traveling, and she also loves sports like Pilates, table-tennis and swimming.
